Background
Outdoor recreation organisations have been working for many years to improve access to their sites and pathways for disabled people. There is no doubt that guidance developed through initiatives such as the Countryside for All Standards and Countryside Agency's By All Reasonable Means have lead to real improvements in access to the outdoors, particularly for people with disabilities, although perhaps less emphasis has been placed on information provision. In recent years a further impetus for improving access has come about following the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, which imposed duties on organisations to promote equality for disabled people in terms of employment and service delivery. Now almost three years on from the implementation of the Act, it is timely to take stock, look at what has been achieved and share good practice.
Aims of the event
The aims of this workshop are to:-
- - Review how effective the Act has been in stimulating improved recreational access to the outdoors;
- - Exchange good practice in improving access and information regarding outdoor recreation for disabled people;
- - Identify priority issues and areas of work to be taken forward over the next few years.
It is hoped that the workshop will stimulate innovative ideas and ways of thinking to raise awareness of and participation in outdoor recreation activities by people with disabilities.
The workshop will address all forms of disability - including physical, sensory and mental impairment.
